Pirates I: Anne Bonny
A couple of days ago, I writed about womans of history, but I didn't talk about my favourite two womans of history, my inspiration, my idols. Why I didn't talk about them? Because I thought I could do a whole post or even two posts about it
Anne Bonny and Mary Read are the most famous women pirates in history, and they are the only ones known to have plied their trade in the Western hemisphere.
Anne Bonny born in Ireland and she was the illegitimate daughter of William Cormac and his housemaid. They went to America after Anne's birth, and years later, she eloped with James Bonny against her father wishes. There is a story that she set fire to her father's plantation, but there isn't evidence that support it. James took her to a pirate's lair in the Bahamas, but in 1718, when Bahamian governor Woodes Rogers offered the king's pardon to any pirate, James turned informant. Anne was very disgusted with his cowardice and soon after, she met (And fell in love) with a swaggering pirate, the captain Jack Rackham. Disguising herself like a male, she began sailing with him on his sloop "Vanity" or "Revenge" (It's not known exactly).
It is reported that Anne became pregnant by Jack and she retired from piraty only long enough to have her child and leave it with friends in Cuba before rejoining him and her adventurous life on the seas.
In october 1720 they were attacked by a king's ship and most of Rackham's pirates didn't put up much resistence, because many of them were too drunk (Other sources indicate that it was night so most of them were sleeping)
Rackman and his crew were taken to Jamaica, where they were convicted and sentenced by the governor of Jamaica to be hanged. According to some sources, Bonny's last words to her captain were: "Sorry to see you there, but if you'd fought like a man, you wouldn't have been hang like a dog"
After being sentenced, Anne and Mary asked for mercy because they were pregnant and in accordance with english common law, both women recived a temporary stay of execution until their babies born. Unfortunately, she died in prision, probably from a fever, though it has been alleged that she died during the childbirth.
